If I have a program that when running uses: (using no bitmaps)

7.208 Kbs

And if i let it use a dsr resource file approx. 815 Kb
26 bitmaps and 2 gifs....

And i run the program again it jumps to : 20,176 Kb

How come ????

I just came across this posting. Unfortunately, one of my programs is experiencing the same. Did you ever determine the cause(s) of your particular memory problems?

I found it may have been a bug in vds 4.5 as it works great in VDS5 with the memory usage staying with normal parameters.

Using *.dsr files within vds 4.5 caused some probs.

With several of my programs, when running them and monitoring with the Windows Task Manager, I see big fluctuations in the Mem Usage column...

For example, upon initially running one of my programs, it will run at 5,200 k or so, then when the browser element (for example) is loaded, the program will climb upwards of 16,000 k or so. Upon removal of the browser element, it remains at 16,000 k.

In fact, I compiled a basic test executable (i.e. a simple dialog with one button), compiled it, and it ran at 4,500 k or so. Kind of a lot for a simple little application, eh? I am using VDS 5.

Does anyone know why this is? Any solutions?

FYI: Because I live on the Florida Panhandle, I may be unreachable for awhile. It looks like I am going to have to evacuate due to Hurricane Ivan. 8-(

Why are you worrying about this? Is your system running slow because of lack of memory or something?

Who knows how the memory allocation system works? Possibly memory which has been used when you open the browser element or something doesn't get freed straight away in case it can be used by something else. In some languages memory is freed back to the OS by a process called the "garbage collector" which runs periodically. So you should only be concerned if the memory usage constantly grows while an application is running, or it isn't all released back to the OS when it closes.

Jules: Thanks for the input. I was just worried that too much memory was being used by my application (which needs to run in the background at all times).

FreezingFire: Unfortunately, my community was one of the hardest hit areas in the United States. However, we (and our house) came out virtually unscathed. (We lost a few shingles, but not a drop of water entered the house, even though a tidal wave (i.e. a huge "wall" of surge) hit the street dropping boats, staircases, and houses (yes, houses) all over the place. Some of our neighbors lost their homes... We are currently without power, but I have temporary Internet access via a hotel connection.

Enjoy your computing guys, because being without power (and net access) is a major bummer. (Just glad to be alive at the moment!)

Thanks Serge. A lot of people over here are suffering. This is the first time in recorded history that four hurricanes have hit Florida in a single season. (Five if you count the small tropical storm near the beginning of the season--although this one was not a hurricane.)
