A big sory about this announcement but VDS 6 is Doomed...
Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition is for free not sure about commercial use
you can download from
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vb/download/
from http://msdn.microsoft.com/coding4fun/
Express is free for one year
Until November 7, 2006, we are promotionally discounting the downloadable versions of Express to free. This doesn’t mean that the product turns off after a year, but rather that as long as you download the product before November 7, 2006, you can get it for free and you can use it forever.

I don't think that announcement made any difference for me - I have used VDS because it has been easier for me to learn instead of my couple of forays into VB, not because of any price difference. It is just easier to whip up super-fast applications, in my opinion. _________________ Joe Floyd |

Oh Yeah sign me up for a programming language that requires
Operating System
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
Windows XP Service Pack 2
Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1
Windows x64 editions
Windows Vista
Processor
Computer with a 600 mhz or faster processor
(1 GHz or higher recommended)
RAM
Minimum: 192 MB
Recommended: 256 MB (512 MB or more with SQL Express)
Hard Drive
Minimum: 500 MB
Includes Visual C# Express and the .NET Framework 2.0
Full Installation: 1.3 GB
Also includes MSDN Express Library 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
And just think Micro$oft requires all this hardware and give you the program for free too. Anyway I think I will pay for a programming language that can fit on a floopy before I will install a language that requires a SQL server just to install it for free Seems overkill for a language called Visual Basic Express.... All this to write 20 lines of Hello World code when VDS can do this
I see no worries of me switching from VDS to this. _________________ Home of

Nice to here this i was little bit worried
This Basic Express requires .NET 2.0 for compiled applications or what ?
Mybe NASA use this kind of programing probably not...
This code is for button long like hell (what is ByVal)
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click |

Free is nice and probably I'll use it sometimes (being a programming language freak) and VB is not that bad a language (programmed with it for years) but I prefer a language where I can distribute my application with a 400 Kb runtime DLL instead of forcing my users to install megabytes of additional software (.Net Framework) just to be able to run my applications.
The elegance in VDS for me is the "lean and mean" concept.

For me VDS means extremely rapid application development. This is the first language that I started in (well not totally true as I did alot of work in Perl in the past and still use it frequently on Linux systems). I like the fact that VDS allows me to make updates for customers quickly and easily without screwing up every little detail in the process since it truly is a scripted language. The only downside I see in VDS is that some of the dialogs are limited because of how the inner workings of the language interact with Windows but this could honestly be a windows limitation and not a VDS limitation. Personally I would'nt program in any other language for RAD applications no matter how "free" it is. I would rather save my customers money because I can get stable applications out the door quicker in VDS than any other language. _________________ K Wetzel
