By default Windows XP ignores unknown file types when searching for a "Word or phrase in the file". http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309173

If you want to be able to find dsc files that contain certain text you need to edit the registry. You could make it so XP searches inside all files, but this can greatly slow down searches. The best solution is to make the .dsc extension one of the file types that XP uses the text file search filter for.

1. Find and open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.dsc key
2. Create a new subkey named PersistentHandler
3. Open this new key and set the (Default) string's value to {5e941d80-bf96-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}
4. Reboot (though I found this wasn't necessary)

Now when you search for text in files XP will use the text-file search filter on *.dsc files (instead of ignoring them).

I also did the same thing for .dsp and .fil files (I had to create the .fil key).
