Now that VDS is in danger of becoming a legacy app some users might like to know that both VDS 5 and VDS 6 will run as portable apps. This is really quite nice, as it allows for a portable IDE with compilation of scripts while running from USB stick. As far as I can see, the host registry is untouched.

I haven't scrutinized the fine print to check for licensing infractions but it is a great selling point.

So are you saying that VDS will run without the use of the following registry key?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Commercial Research\VDS\6.0

dragonsphere, thanks for raising this.

VDS 5 and VDS 6 will run as registered from USB stick without any pre-existing VDS registry keys on the host computer. However, a key is created at first run at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Commercial Research\VDS

This key is then used to hold some settings related to the last session. Registration information is not stored in the key.

I suppose a purist would therefore say VDS is not a true portable app. However there are many shareware apps which are sold as portable which leave similar traces on the host computer.

Although this is an old threat I created a utility that will merge the registry settings created and used by VDS on startup and then wrote a launcher that writes the keys and then starts VDS from the thumb drive. I call my launcher instead of VDS and I have never had any problems with it.

I just do something similiar to the following

REGISTRY WRITE, bla bla
SHELL OPEN, @path(%0)vds.exe
exit

Wow, I thought that most people knew this already. ALL versions of VDS can be put on a USB drive. All that needs done, it that you do need to make sure that the VDSRunXX.dll is in the VDS.exe folder. VDS Does need this to run right, other than that. Works great. I have been doing this since VDS 2. Smile

What about the demos?

Obviously you can change the default project folder to be on the USB stick, but for some reason I alsways have trouble getting the demos to run from the URLs embedded in the help file. Where exactly does VDS 5 and VDS 6 look for the demo scripts?
