|

Hey Tommy,
When a new topic is posted, the list shows the new topic
in BOLD print, but when an existing topic has a new post,
it doesn't. I have to check the date (and last poster) and
guess as to whether a new post has been made.
Is there a solution for this?
Also, is there any way to put up a page at the old forum
address to direct folks to this one? I know you emailed
the registered users, but we had a lot of guests that
probably don't have a clue what happened...

Once you're logged in, you should be able to check for new posts by looking at the icon next to a board, or by clicking at "View posts since last visit" to retrieve a list. This only works well though if you login and out each time; if you use automatic login and idle for something like 10 minutes, it assumes you offline and seems to mark all posts as read. I think this should be well enough for now though.
Personally I think that people that notice the old board not to work will look for the forum through the main page again and will find the new board, but yes, a notice at the location of the old board would be better, I'll see what I can do about that.
Best regards,
Tommy |

Hi Tommy,
I always automatically log in.
The colored icon seems to work OK. The problem
so far is, if there's a new topic posted AND posts
to an existing topic, the new topics show up bold,
but the new posts to an existing topic do not.
It's kind of frustrating to have to try remember
who posted what last, and it's only gonna get
worse as the board grows.
And what's the deal with "10 minutes"? I often
spend more time going over a problem that
someone's posted. And why would it mark
everything as "read" no matter how long we've
been logged in?

It's weird how things work differently for different people.
Posts with new replies show up just like new posts do for me with IE 5.5 and Netscape 4.74 after I log in.
I guess we get what we pay for.. _________________ -Sheep

Hey Sheep,
LOL, and I guess ya bought both IE and Netscape...
I am still using IE 4 though. That may be the problem,
or it may be the "10 minute" thingy that's throwin' me off.
Not sure why we gotta work here within a time limit...

Hmm, neither the Section nor the topic was bold/had a different icon.
Because I was already here I guess..but it should do it no matter what I would think. _________________ -Sheep

Of course there isn't a time limit. For me it seemed to assume me as offline after something like 10 minutes (maybe more) if no activity. And after going offline, I think it takes you read all new posts so that they won't be shown as new anymore.

Uh... ain't that a time limit, Tommy?
Like I said, I often read a post and spend more than
10 minutes solving a problem or coding a solution
(during which time I'm "idle" on the board). Also, it
could take longer than 10 minutes to figure some of
them out (especially if there's code, or when converting
it to understandable English...).
So if I do this, It's gonna consider me "offline", and
mark all posts as "read"? Is this 10 minutes "idle"
time limit adjustable?
I know you have a lot of time and effort into this new
board, and I'm really trying to like it.

Hopefully the cookie problem is finally solved. The cookies were configured to expire after 900 seconds (15 minutes), without me being aware of it. I set this to 0 seconds so that they should only expire after the browser is closed or the site is left.
(Update:) I changed the approach, as this reasoning doesn't seem to work out... I set the cookie session time to 24 hours.
Best regards,
Tommy |
