1024 kilobytes make a megabyte, even though opinions differ on this:

Hard disk manufacturers have always worked on 1000 x 1000, which is why so many people are surprised when their 40GB hard disk turns out to only hold 38GB.

VDSRC.EXE might fix your problem.

Quote:
Visual DialogScript 4.50 Resource Compiler

Usage: VDSRC resourcescript [resourcefile] [options]

resourcescript = <filepath>.RC
resourcefile = <filepath>.DSR

options:
/M - create map file <resourcescriptpath>.MAP
/Q - quiet operation
/G - display GUI message boxes not console output

Code:
%%VDSRC = "C:\Program Files\Visual DialogScript\VDSRC.EXE"
%%map = "C:\mapfile.txt"
%%output = "C:\res.dsr"
%%input = "C:\res.rc"
rem -- Use the following list to list your resources --
list create,1
list loadtext,1
"c:\bmp1.bmp
"c:\bmp2.bmp
list savefile,1,%%input
wait 1
shell open,%%VDSRC,%%input /M /G
info Resource compiling should be done!

BTW Nathan, you might as well just wait until VDS 5 is released as this
has an Integrated Resource Linker and everything. This will make it a
lot easier and will eliminate the need for the DSR file. Wink

Nice code, Mac! Very Happy

There's also another program, Visual Resource, which is a front-end for
the VDSRC.EXE file.

It's available at http://rolandfg.vdsworld.com/ Wink

Download Directly: http://www.vdsworld.com/~rolandfg/get.php?id=visual_resource&type=_setup.exe&lang=eng

Ok, I tried using FF SCript, Macs Script and also the Visual Resource Program from: rolandfg.

It's still doing the same thing, WHY is is using more memory ! !!! Mad

Anyway I might just have to wait until VDS5 Comes out, maybe this will cure it ! But i really wanted to release an update to my program !

OK, I think i have a reason why it's doing this ! Very Happy Very Happy

If i recompile the bitmaps into several DSR's say 3 each holding approx. 8 bitmaps. The memory usages drops by over 10 Mb !!!

So there might be a bug when VDS is reading in a resource file over a certain size or reading in a certain amounts of bitmaps stored in the dsr file.

Can anyone confirm/deny this ??

Nathan
(It's not an ideal solution, but it will do until VDS 5 Very Happy Comes Out Soon I hope : Very Happy )

----------------------
Wee update !
----------------------
I have split up the bmps, icons & gifs into 4 different dsr's

dsr1 = 284Kb (15 bmps)
dsr2 = 13.1Kb (9 bmps)
dsr3 = 99.8Kb (2 gifs)
dsr4 = 415Kb (2 bmps)

When using FF memory script(see early posts) My program only uses:

8.25Mb instead of over 16Mb Very Happy Very Happy

If I use the original bitmaps etc, not compiled into a resource file the memory is:

7.98Mb

So is it a bug in VDS !

Nathan

DSR files are just a files appended to the end of each other, so i dont understand why using one resource maker application will make different DSR files or using one will make the problem you are describing and using another not, you can do DSR files with a simple HEX editor or even with notepad(in some cases), the DSR files dont have a header or a table

Of course if the DSR maker application is making buggy files that might be the problem, but in anycase, it will just crash the loading application or show corrupt graphis/text or make corrupt extractins of files.
