Unfortunately the APIs that let you detect file accesses are available under NT and its descendants only. _________________ The Tech Pro

Thanks a lot Jules, I got the reg. Hum... interesting thought. That is a very good idea. Now, how to go about developing it... I'll have to give it some good thought.
Thanks Again, _________________ Chris

What about just checking CRC values? I'm sure if the file changed even
one byte that the CRC will have changed also.

| I think Jules is detecting when a file is opened, thus backing up the file before any changes are made to it. A crc would check after the file has already been modified thus nullifying the backup. |

No I think he is using a File folder monitor API.
I don't remember it's exact name now but it will detect changes made to a monitored folder. There were some problems using it with @LIB() directly (I think callback) and so I had left it.
You can do CRC way but I don't know if all the apps it would be intended to be used allow shared access to a file in use. I know.. with VDS that may not be a problem. _________________ Regards

Yes, CodeScript is right. I'm using that API. In a DLL, not using @lib.
There are DLLs that provide the same functionality under Win9x, but they are expensive. I don't know how you'd go about writing one from scratch, but it seems like a lot of work for an obsolete OS. And if you were monitoring a big chunk of the directory tree, checking all the files to see if they had changed would be a big overhead. It would appear that Windows hooks the actual file I/O operations, so you get an event each time a program writes to a file. _________________ The Tech Pro

Unfortunately, magazines don't like writers using their pages to promote their own private stuff. |
Wow! You are a columnist for PC Magazine? I read PC Magazine
from cover to cover and have never seen your name anywhere. _________________ FreezingFire

Hi CodeScript,
Actually my Guardian.dll has this ability. It does not matter if the file is open or not it can read the file to see if it has changed and if so it will tell you.
I am not exactly sure if I understand what you guys are trying to do but it sounds like you want away to monitor a directory and back up files that have changed or that has been accessed last. I think I seen some code for this not to long ago so I will try to dig it up and maybe post something to the Advanced VDS forum for ya. Of course it will prob. be written in C _________________ Home of

Mindpower, that'd be great. I'm kind of tired of having to dig up files
with undelete everytime VDS dumps my directory.
Re Jullian and "Obsolete OS".....
I like my obsolete os's

Well actually I don't think that MicroSoft considers Windows ME obsolete _________________ Home of

About the skinning. How did you invision it working? Do you mean a program that creates skins or like Serge said a DSU that has different skins compiled into it that can be used a VDS controls or am I way off base here? _________________ Chris

I was thinking of a program that created skins. You would need a number of different skins which would provide the themes for the user to choose. But they would be designed in such a way that they could be chopped up and then reassembled like building blocks, so the user could make a window as tall or as wide as they needed. You could perhaps have a choice of optional features that fitted in with the theme. Ideally you could then produce a single bitmap of the finished skin that you could use for the background of your VDS dialog. _________________ The Tech Pro
