Hi Again,

I played around with it some more. This time, I zipped a regular .exe (i.e. not an SFX). Same results as before... No warning when extracted from the .zip file.

Please note that Winzip is installed on my machine and is set as my default zip utility. Perhaps the warning messages only appear when .zip files are opened via Windows XP? If this is the case, then the warning will probably not appear to users using earlier operating systems (or to XP users using third-party zip applications).

Can anyone confirm?

Cheers,

- Boo

Okay boys and girls...

Confirmed. I set XP to open zip files and receive the warning for the .exe in the .zip. However, no warning when the .zip is opened with a third-party app.

That figures.

FYI, I received a warning this afternoon opening in Explorer a PDF file from a downloaded ZIP file. Paranoia or what?

I guess there will also be some new error messages in SP2: "A non-Microsoft© application and/or document has been found. Please reboot your system and perform a system restore."... Laughing

Are you using NTFS? I read that information was written about the file as an auxiliary data stream under NTFS, which means that it can keep track that an EXE came from a Zip file and still display the warning. On a FAT disk there is no facility to do this.

No, using FAT32 here since I install and uninstall different versions of
Win9x and NT frequently.

Here's a list of programs that are known to experience a loss of functionality when they run on a Windows XP Service Pack 2-based computer: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2 Rolling Eyes

I dont think i am going to install SP2 Wink

Windows XP SP2 is fine for me. Smile It just frustrated me when I found out
that the startup screens for both Windows XP Home Edition and Windows
XP Professional editions are now identical. Kind of makes me feel like
they are worth about the same. Wink
