I just wanted to say That i think VDS is easy to use and is a great programming tool.
PC Protector
------------------
Since I released PC Protector Lite last May 02 It had over 8,900 Downloads from download.com alone. Total: 13,456 (I have recently pulled it of the site due to a complete revamp of the program). (I am releasing the network version at the end of the month)
Pixy Professional
---------------------
Pixy Professional was released mid November 02, and since then to know it has had over 6,734 Downloads from various shareware sites.
I have had a good qty of users register Pixy also.
Sorry, I am not boasting But I think VDS is great and long may it last

Hi Nathan,
Hey, I can relate. Between Memory-Trax II and Memory-Trax III, there
have been well over a million downloads since December of 1999. I
stopped keeping track back in August of 2001, so I have no clue what
the total download count for Memory-Trax is to date.
And I'm sure others here have testimonials similar to yours and mine.

OK, now you guys have sparked my interest -- how many registrations have you generated / what kind of $$$ has that translated into? I have written a large number of files for uses in our office that would be great for other users too. It would be worth polishing them up a bit if there was some money in it for shareware registrations! |

Memory-Trax II was freeware. Memory-Trax III started off as
shareware. Didn't sell very well, so I dropped it down to freeware. It
was only shareware from January 2001 through August 2001 and
grossed approximately $500 USD. But!!!! I only listed the program
on sites and did nothing to really promote the program. And I didn't
list it a lot of listing sites at that time also.
Memory-Trax III was also featured on TechTV and I think was brought
back up as a featured item on their show again this past month. SharewareJunkies
gave an outstanding review also as well as a few other sites here
and there.
I was going to pull Memory-Trax III from distribution, but everytime I
get ready to do so, someone features it on a site somewhere, and the
downloads start up again.
If you have software that is of interest to today's internet users, it's
quality made, priced right, web site is professional, and you do proper
marketing, then you can make a good run at this. But you can't put in
a 50% effort. If you do, you'll get nothing back.

I too have had limited success with my program Canary. When it was freeware, i would get around 10 registration applications a day. The moment i made it shareware, the interest in it went down. I once again made it freeware except for an add for its cousin Pro version, and the interest has picked a little bit - no where near what it was when it was freeware.
Canary has been featured in mags, in mags CD, ... It has been reviewed at TechTV and has been mentioned in the International Herald. All these have resulted in a huge rush of registration applications - but that was when it was freeware!!!
Because of Australian laws, i am thinking of either making all my software free or charity-ware ie. all proceeds go to a charity.
By law, i have to declare all my software sales as income (which means that i loose 46% in tax) and then i can't submit my expenses as tax deductions. All this means that i loose big time!
So, consider also the taxation issue before deciding to sell your software.

Serge,
I think in your case, the web site needs a more modern look. It
looks outdated currently which may give the potential users the
wrong impression about your software also.

Interesting comment, Garrett. I know that it is not a vds question, but what makes a site modern?

My first two shareware programs Throttle & PCMedik (both made in VDS) generated roughly $20,000 US within their first 4 months out on the market. I have since updated the products with Delphi but nonetheless they did begin their life as VDS made app's. |

No, he didn't mis-type, that is the correct number. He also put in a lot
of work and effort to achieve that number.

But then again I had great people like Garrett helping me out - building my website, sharing information, etc and Tommy - alot of help with Delphi, and patience with me . The total numbers at the end of the year were close to $70,000 US which does not include expenses. |

The graphics and layout of the design you currently have is something
that would have been seen back in the mid 90's on the internet. I think
most of the graphics resemble that of 16 color graphics, and no
antialias, so they are boxed type graphics.
VDSWorld is a more up to date design.
Here's another one with a more modern design:
http://www.pyxia.com/
Graphics are smooth and not choppy, colors used do not collide and
are easy on the eyes. The design reflects the current time of what a
web site looks like on the internet today.
Here's one of my sites, a bit simple, but still in tune with the times.
http://eyrisdev.com/
But along with the design of the site, you must also use marketing
tactics within the design and text. You need to use words that spark
the interest of the buyer, or hot words that hit an emotion in them
that makes them feel that they do seriously need the product.
Take a look around the net at some sites and see if you can get
some idea's.

thanks for your feedback, Garrett. I see what you mean with both web sites
I will look at modernizing my web site at some stage in the future when i have finished with my current project. I had already started updating the text to make it more marketing orientated but then i got distracted by a new project with vds...
