Would it be possible for this site to maintain a list of improvements that people would like to see in the next version of VDS, where people could vote for each suggestion, so you would end up with a ranked list ranging from "I'd definitely buy an upgrade for this" to "well I suppose it might be useful." I think the developers of VDS woud find it useful... Wink

Hey Jules,

I agree this would be a cool idea. As soon as I get some time -- something
I don't have a lot of right now -- I'll try and make something like that.

If I forget, please remind me. I've got so much to do I can't keep it all
straight. Wink

I think so. A lot of the ideas for things to go in VDS 5 came from here, but it's easy to lose a suggestion in a bunch of forum postings, and it's hard to distinguish between an idea that only one person thinks is a good one, and one that everyone would like to see. The developers may be too busy to participate in the forum, but it doesn't mean they wouldn't look at a wish list.

Does anyone have any ideas on when a new version will be released? What version it will be and what it will have of new features?

All that is known at this stage is that work is being done on the next version of VDS. Nothing can be said about what new features it will include because anyone who knows anything about it will be under a non disclosure agreement. I would hazard a guess that there is a chance it will be released by next summer.

Where do I sign? Laughing

Ok, thanks jules.
Will it be a major update?

My guess is that it will not be a major overhaul because VDS 5 pretty
much takes the cake. But if you look at the patterns, VDS 3 was a major
update to VDS 2, but VDS 4 was not a major update. VDS 5 was a major
update to VDS 4, but I presume VDS 6 will not be a major update to VDS 5.

One thing I want SO bad in VDS 6 is integrated executable options. But
don't tell me 30 reasons why there shouldn't be that: that's just my wish. Wink

When I ment major version I did mean will it be version 5.5 or 6.0 since a major version as 6.0 is version form, it would require a license update to be purchased I guess. Am I right?

My biggest whish for VDS would be a pure machine code compiler such as Purebasic, so it wouldn't require that runtime file, or at least have it built into the exe as an option. Purebasic, which is another language I used freqently doesn't require any dll's and a typically small window or console app is around 4kb in size. Any chance for something similar in VDS? *drooooling*

I must admit that I really love Purebasic, because of it's power, speed and flexibility, but I really prefer VDS because it's more straight forward in language terms and the dialog designer is better in VDS than in PB. That's just MO Wink

I would love smaller runtime also, and integrated into the exe. But one
step further is that I would love for VDS to have the ability not to compile
into the exe things our code does not need. I know that's a really tall
order and no likely to happen, since it would require far more work and
a total redesign of the code behind VDS itself.

Garrett, I agree.
Purebasic does that. When you add an external lib and use it's commands and functions it is automatically added to the exe. Any unused stuff is dismissed and the resulting exe is very small.

My wishlist would be to have a built in licensing scheme for your applications. A wizard that would prompt the developer for information and a methods of registering the software such as online key creation and the ability to have your exe's check a server to determine if the key is a licensed copy, the ability to revoke a license key or similar. Probably wont happen but i coded this when I also coded an automated update utility for VBS so that I could update my software easily and allow customers to do that same.

I mean we spend all this time coding and it doesnt make sense to let other people use our software without paying for it.

I have tested stubs with integrated runtimes. In fact, the current version of the VDS 6 IDE can build standard, integrated or NT service EXEs for both VDS 5 and 6! I feel the ability to build VDS 5 EXEs will be useful for migration, and also because the smaller VDS 5 runtime may be preferable when it is integrated. The VDS 6 runtime could be twice the size of VDS 5 or even more, by the time it is finished.

VDS is designed a an interpreted script language so it is probably fair to say that there will never be a version that compiles to native executable code. For the same reason, it will not be possible to link in only the parts of the runtime that are used.

As for software licensing, I think most people like to design their own system. If you have one system, and it gets cracked, then it is cracked for everyone who uses it. So it is better for each program to have its own protection system.
