Great. I was thinking that instead of getting rid of the lines I commented out, you could execute them conditionally depending on whether @ext(@path(%0)) is "exe" and the filename starts with a #. That would make it pretty consistent with VDS in loading resources from disk when in the IDE and from the EXE when compiled.

The only other thing that I was trying to figure out how to do was an xp-menu set command that would enable me to change the menu that was expanded under the control of my script, so I can keep it in step if I want to force the display of a different page.

Skit or Jules:

Did you have a chance to look at the components at that www.blueshoes.net site?

Obviously, a lot of work has gone into creating these (and they charge a nice price for them) - but is that kind of stuff possible in VDS? I assume it was all created with DHTML and Javascript.

I did take a look, but since they wanted money, I didn't look for long. My reaction was much the same as if I was looking at a commercial Delphi component. Yes, it's possible, if someone is clever enough to implement it, but if they aren't, who is prepared to pay the price of the commercial version?

I haven't tried, but since it is possible to run Java from a file external to the web page, it is probably possible to run it from an embedded resource with a res://exename/resourcename kind of URL. So in theory, it would be possible to buy commercial (or free) Java-based components, embed the Java in your EXE and run them in a browser element.

I'd personally not recommend using Java based components. I do not think Microsoft ships Java with Windows any longer, most PC manufacturers will include it but some will simply not install it at all.

Java is great and all but its no longer a 'standard' feature of Windows so you would have to have a java machine installed on your computer for those components to work.

The software available at blueshoes however appears to be all html based and javascript (not the same as java and requires no java machine). Those appear to be safe, but honestly much of what they have there is available on www.resourceindex.com for free.

I updated and uploaded the script. There are two new commands, "xp-menu open" and "xp-menu" close and one new function "@xp-menu(menu,<name>)". I also added a new parameter to the "xp-menu create" command with which you can specify a cursor to use. I also added dragonsphere's two cents (aka removing the hex numbers from names Smile). For more information and the download link, go back to [ the original topic ]... Smile

That's fantastic. I'll grab this and play when I'm back at work on Monday.

for vds 6, would it be possible to have a feature whereby we can specify whether a program can be "seen" in the system tray or in CTRL-ALT-DELETE

in other words, have various levels of invisiblity

I didn't want to comment on this, because it does not belong in this thread, but a program won't appear in the system tray if you don't create an icon for it. I don't see how you can stop a process appearing in the task list. The whole point of the task list is so you can see what is running there. Even Windows system processes appear there, so I don't see why your (or my) VDS programs shouldn't appear there.

hi jules,

i would like that feature because of my program canary which is a computer and internet monitoring program and i would to offer my users the ability to run it totally invisible so that even using ctrl-alt-delete then no one can see that it is running

may be the administrators can move my initial post to a new one to stay on topic

The only situation where a task does not appear is under a restrictive (non-administrative) user, in which case tasks started under a different user account don't appear. So the solution is probably to create a special account for your spyware application and use "runas" to start it under that account. I think also non-interactive NT service applications (which you will be able to create with VDS 6) are hidden from non-administrative users, but I'm not sure about it.

Serge,

A trick I've used in the past is to rename your app's EXE
to something that sounds like a Windows system/video
file or driver to novices (i.e. "Win mpeg driver.EXE").

You can instruct the purchaser on this design and possibly
suggest a few optional names in your program installer.

Obviously this won't fool experienced users, but neither
would having it invisible in the CTRL+ALT+DEL box. Wink

Cheers, Mac Smile
