WARNING - IDE is eating scripts again

Make sure that you backup the script you where working at before you close the project or exit the IDE!
VDS 5.01 deleted this morning the main .dsc (not the includes, they where saved in a subdir) file of a program I worked at for many, many weeks/months.
I did had a backup of a few days back, but there's still many code lost. Crying or Very sad

This is what happend: I closed the project, opened it again, and the .dsc file was gone!

Therefore, I'm currently working at a program, CodeBackup, that creates a backup of all your scripts at Windows startup (or manually, of course). I think this is the only way to protect our scripts against the 'script eating IDE'. Confused The program will be released this weekend, I think.

I hope I've warned you all in time,
Vic

Hmm... I tried to split this topic so the posts where I 'released' CodeBackup where placed in the 'Other product support/announcements' section, but it went wrong Embarassed Embarassed

Here are the replies to this topic...

thanks for the warning vic...this is a major concern when so much time has been spent on code to have it disappear just like that...it would be nice if the ide could do an automatic backup to a directory of our choice as we are working on code

Hey Vic,

Ya might consider making it as a "front end" for
the IDE that would first do the backups, then start
VDS (just point shortcuts to the frontend).

This way it'd be automatic, especially for those that
rarely reboot. Ya could also use a command line param,
and leave the param off for manual backups (so it
wouldn't try to start the IDE).

Just a thought. Wink

Cheers, Mac Smile

Sorry guys.. Embarassed
Vic

Please post comments/suggestions to the CodeBackup program [ here ]; located in the 'Other product support/announcements' section.

Vic

hi all,

well, i am currently absolutely fed up with my laptop running windows xp as my dsc files are disappearing sometimes after coming up with an error when running the scripts through the ide and sometimes just for running the scripts

my script files disappear...and i mean disappear! they are no where to be found...not even in the recycle bin

i suspect that windows xp has something to do with all this as i had been running vds 5 on a previous laptop running windows 98se and never ever had that problem

it is getting to be so bad that i have to do a zip backup of my scripts before i run them after each amendment to the code...this is no way to spend my time

also, i selected several folders with my fresh code (which took me 3 hours of work)...and then i right clicked for windows to compress them and presto my folders disappeared...again no where to be found...so i had to spend another 3 hours re-doing all the code with the procedure mentioned above of always zipping the folder before running anything

this is just unworkable at the serious level Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

any one come up with a possible explanation for this madness??!!?!?!??!?!

Hi Serge,

A few days ago (and also a few times prior to that), I experienced what Vic originally experienced. When VDS was closed, it wiped out all of my scripts and related files. Fortunately, most of my work was backed up, but this situation is always a real bummer. I too am running Windows XP.

FYI: The last couple of times this occurred, I was able to recover my most recent scripts from the Recyle Bin. (Recovered a few minutes of work.)

Best regards,

- Boo

I always use Jules's Tech-Pro GetBack, and I believe that Vic made a
backup program also specifially for VDS.

Yeppers, I use Vic's excellent utility. (However, I lost some work because my scripts were only backed up when the PC was booted. I need to make a habit of backing up regularly while working.) Cool

Thanks for the compliment Boo! Very Happy

Perhaps when I have some more spare time I'll have a look at it again and create a frontend feature, like Mac suggested. And I need to remove the VisionWare-links, since visionware.org doesn't exists anymore....

GetBack (http://www.vdsworld.com/getback.html) backs up files as soon as you save them. So it isn't just useful in this situation. It can also save you a lot of time when you realise that some change you made wasn't such a good idea after all, and you want to get back to (or even just look at) an earlier version.

Argh! I accidentally hit Esc and lost my original reply, so I had to retype it in a bit of a huff. I meant http://www.tech-pro.net/getback.html. And this time I remembered to make it clickable as well!

Hi Serge,

Glad you like the pic! The picture was taken on the Florida Panhandle (i.e. on the Gulf of Mexico) a few weeks ago with my digital camera. Our beaches here are known as "The Emerald Coast." I'm an easy-going Floridian who enjoys Floridays. Cool

Cheers,
