I have run into a problem with a program that uses the browser element under Terminal Services with Server 2003.

I think it has to do with new tighter restrictions on Internet Explorer in Server 2003, but I can't figure it out.

When I log on as a user without administrator rights, the program gives an error when the VDSBRW50.dll is called. Error message window titled: "VDS Web Browser Extension" and the message says "This extension requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later."

When I log on with Admin rights, it all runs fine.

Also, when I don't have admin rights, I can still surf the net and use Internet Explorer. But there is some setting in the admin rights that are required to use the browser extension, it seems.

I have checked to make sure that my user has rights to use the .dll itself.

Any ideas or has anyone else run into this problem?

You need to turn off Internet Explorer Enhanced Security on the server.

To do this you need to remove the option for it in Add/Remove Programs-->Windows Components.

I did that already and it solved some other problems I was having, but not this problem. Also, my "non-admin" user CAN surf the web, which he could not do before turning off Enhanced Security.

The error seems like Internet Explorer is not letting VDSBRW50.dll use the "parts" of Internet Explorer somehow. That's just my impression - I don't know enough about it to really have any idea.

Thanks for the link to the thread on that topic. I searched for one, but couldn't find it. Surprising since I actually posted on that thread last year!

I had pretty much the same result as the other thread. My version number was fine in the registry, but it still wouldn't run.

When I switched to VDSSURFX, it worked fine.

Now - one other question:

Does anyone know how to tell if a program is running under terminal services? I suppose I could run "Query Session > c:\test.txt". If running on a server, it will show the session info. Otherwise it will give an error and send nothing to the text file.
