Can someone explain to me about copyrights? i.e. How can you get one, do they cost anything, etc.?

I had read the loc.gov documentation before and I took it that registering one is optional and it doesn't cost anything if you don't register...is that correct? I didn't quite comprehend that part about pricing...

My understanding is that once you have an original idea in a tangible form (written, recorded, etc.) you own the copyright. You do not need to register it, but doing so can save you some trouble if anyone ever violates your copyright and you call them on it. If you want to register a copyright, you will pay a fee to do so. Either way, you still own the copyright to your idea.
