Hi Jules,

Yes I was looking at Clam and was going to use it because of the ability for it to run as a service. However I'm not running a hotmail service so I think running a small commandline app on each mail instance is not going to hurt the performance of the server in anyway since it executes and closes itself and does not stay resident in memory the whole time. Obviously on a very high load server with tons of email coming in going the route of a service is the way to go since you don't spawn 8 mb+ instances on each virus scan.

I tested the performance and saw the server never jumps above 2% cpu usage while emails coming in and being processed by Panda. I had one really nice ISP in Canada that kept bouncing virus infected emails to me - about 10 per minute and the load or cpu usage never jumped higher then 5%, memory is also very good and always is around 600+MB free (1 gig total).

I just don't like the idea of running a port of a virus scanner. I've also heard many people claim that ClamAV for Windows won't even pickup the Eicar test virus which may be intentional or not on Clams part since it's not really a real 'virus' but a simulated one. Also who knows how long Clam is going to be around, it's an open source project but are they making $ to keep funding their effort? I'd rather pay a few bucks to go with a company that is viable and I can ensure my method of virus detection is stable for the next few years.

I run ClamAV on the RedHat Linux server for email virus detection and it's worked great, I'm just a bit hesitant to run it on a Windows server.

It's nonsense that it doesn't pick up the Eicar test. In fact, it detects it anywhere in a file, unlike most AVs, which is quite handy for testing, as I can put it in a Word document or even as a resource in a VDS EXE which I can leave running, and then see how my program picks up a "virus" in memory.

The cost isn't an issue for me either (I just renewed by F-Prot for DOS subscription for $29 a couple of days ago) but I'm interested in creating a virus scanner that can be used even by businesses at zero cost. I'm also interested in being able to add virus scanning to my mail server at no extra cost to the user (my own shareware mail server, which I also use myself) although as I've only sold 20 or so licenses it's not exactly a top priority.

As for ClamAV staying around, I think the support it gets from the Linux community will be enough to ensure that. I'd be more concerned that some of the lesser players in the Windows market drop out if Microsoft brings out their own bundled product.

eheheh 'if Microsoft'. It's a matter of time really, they within the last year purchased a AV company: http://www.ravantivirus.com/ . Probably within the next few months there will be a beta version of Microsoft Antivirus out. It's suspected that they are thinking of aquiring Symantec too.

I know somebody ask but I have been trying to find the DLL's for this and tried compiling them without success. Does anybody have the DLL's that they can attach as a file and send to me? I would love to play with these a bit.

Webdaddy,
If you have the source code for Windows for this DLL there should be a delphi sample in the distro. at this path clamav-devel\contrib\wintests\delphi\sample look for a DLL call libclamav.dll and you will need pthreadVC.dll at least that is what it looks like to me. If you can't find it or if your distro does not have it then let me know and I will send you the copy I have here.
