Im trying to show a friend how good VDS is and Im wondering whats the best way to show a totally new user how to use VDS?

When I learned PHP I had lots of books and the best resource the web, I know this board is very good but I was wondering if there where any detailed web sites or anything for a total newbie to VDS, but still offers the advanced user some insight.

In my opinion the VDS help files are not bad, but they could be alot better.

Why not just print out the help file and put it in a three-ring binder? Then
the new user can read through it and see the power of VDS. Smile

That would work, but when I started learning I already had a bit of programming in my blood so it was easy. What about the total new comer?

VDS has the power to be the gateway to many programming languages for all. By this I mean if VDS can be learned easy and the user are shown how fun and rewarding it is, it would open them up to start learning newer complex languages, making a whole new breed of programmers.

VDS has the power to be big, we just need to learn how to use it...
We need some type of VDS for newbies or something.
How about user made help???

Actually that would be a very good idea to make a newbie help file.
I recommend that before you even start programming with VDS that
you have at least some knowledge of DOS, the Registry, and an excellent
experience with Windows and the way it works. Perhaps just try making
an extremely simple VBScript which pops up a message box such as the
one below:

Code:
MsgBox "Hello World!",16,"Welcome"

Then, when you start with VDS you will have some background knowledge
of how things work and the user will really appreciate VDS if they find that
all they need to type is INFO Hello World!

I do recommend that the user starts with extremely simple examples such
as using variables and the basic stuff. Gradually ease them onto more
complicated things such as reading from the registry and writing to the
registry. Also have them try out the dialog designer even if they don't
try those other examples first. Show them that the commands are very
English-like and easy to understand. I spent weeks on just making dialogs
etc. to get a hang of VDS and also because I was fascinated with the ease
of use.

Well yes of course Wink , maybe not learning them, but I was totally fascinated
by the easy ability to make Windows dialogs because I never really knew
how to make them before VDS. I probably wouldn't be out learning other
languages and things if it weren't for VDS. Very Happy

Thank you for your input maybe it could be some kind of project to maybe build a help site or manual or something.

I know what you mean about "if it wasnt for vds" you would have never leaned another language, I myself got into other languages because of VDS. I got hooked when I amazed myself by just making a little program popup dialogs and use data i entered to add number and stuff together.

I think VDS needs more spot light time, not many people know about it.

Give him the examples that come with VDS, pick out an easy one for
him, then have him look at the example line for line, have him go to
the help file an read what each command and function is on each
line. Then let him change commands and functions here and there
to get different results from the example.

Another one that's good for a newbie..... Task them to make a clock.

Have him make a dialog, place a text element on it, and then have
him make a TIMER loop where the text is updated with the new time.

If he does good on that, then maybe have him try to make a
calculator like the windows one.

Thats a great idea Garrett, I will set him some tasks to do and then make them harder. I should have thought of that really...

Thank you
