I've been having problems with closing Messenger Service windows. If you
run Windows 2000, XP, etc., go into the command prompt and type the
following:

Net Send LOCALHOST Test Message

This will provide you with an example of the Windows Messenger Service.
The problem is when I try to close it. So far I can only get it to close by
using the handle of the window. It is ineffective using the Window title
and by using the class name (##32770) it will work but unfortunately it
also closes all extra things such as a download in progress etc.

I'd rather not use the registry to disable the messenger service because
I want to be able to re-enable it without doing a restart.

Thanks in advance for any help. Very Happy

You can use the following commands to start and stop the Windows Messenger service from a command prompt...
Code:
NET START messenger

NET STOP messenger

Or use the SC.exe program to get more detailed info about the service...
Code:
SC START messenger

SC STOP messenger

SC QUERY messenger

Hi FreezingFire,
Actually I think you should always use the Window handle. Classnames can and are duplicated. I would never use a ClassName they may be pretty in code but really they are not always unique. You will notice that Gadget does not use any classnames and I will not use them without using the window handle first to identify the window or control.

@mindpower: Yes, but Window Handles always change. It would involve a
lot of work that could fail to get the specific Window's Handle. It's not as
easy as using %a = @winexists("Messenger Service") for this task. This
way simply does not work.

@hortalonus: THANKS! I'm going to look into that. But if I remember
correctly, NET.EXE isn't included in previous versions Windows before
2000. Confused

Gah! Slap myself! I didn't remember: it would do any good anyway to
use NET.EXE on versions prior to 2000 since you need NET.EXE to use
the Windows Messenger! Rolling Eyes

Thanks Hortalonus and Mindpower!

I'm using the NET START/STOP and it works excellent. Very Happy

Isn't it possible to get the Windows Handle Number by making a winlist? That way you can use @match() to get a part of the title bar...

Yes Skit, that is true, but I have decided to take a different approach than
closing the windows as they appear. If I did that then they would flash for
probably a fraction of a second before they were closed. Stopping the
service will entirely disable it until it is needed again. Smile
