I always pay for components that I use and therefore receive licence keys for them.

However recently I have noticed that some authors change the licence key from iteration to iteration.

Why?

This means that I have to release new versions of my compiled programs each time a new 'changed' licence key is sent to me. And with 30 odd applications and 120 odd users this is a headache!

I am often asked why I have updated an application for no apparent reason (other than the licence key) and I have no answer. Why should I release a new version, when the old one was working perfectly well?

Thoughts?

If you are refering to a VDS DLL. You don't have to recompile your app with the new serial. You own that previous serial and you have the right to use it. If there is an upgrade to the DLL and you want to use the features in the new DLL then yes you would, but other than that you can use the previous dll and key.

Yes, but there are some DLLs that have not changed in functionality, but have changed the key, so that using the DLL requres re-compliation of all your applications.

Your suggestion of retaining the old DLL with the old application does not work for multiple applications as it becomes very difficult to manage multiple versions of the same DLL. I prefer to have one version of the DLLs in the windows system32 folder...

Very true. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Rolling Eyes I beleave the reason for the serial change is because there have been people that have stolen keys or key gens for the DLLs. The new serial system would help keep people from ripping off the DLL/software developers.

Yes, I understand some of the reasons why, but I am concerned that this method of getting at the hackers greatly inconveniences honest actual users.

This is the point I am trying to make!

Surely a serial number blacklist should work just as well without penalising honest users.

As I said above recompiling and re-distributing to multiple users is a real pain.

If somebody makes a keygenerator, no blacklist will help. The only way to secure a program or DLL against a keygenerator, is to look on the internet if the program really is registrated. Unfortunatly, this won't work with real cracks... Sad

Can you name any dll/product here at vdsworld that has done such a thing? All of my dlls have had several upgrades to them, the majority of which have been functionality changes with new features added. I think I've at most ever changed the serial/license system once in vdsobj and vdsipp and this was between major versions of the dll. The reason for the change was not necessarily to thwart pirates but there was a problem in the serial system that caused certain names/serials to not function properly on certain computers.

I did change it for VDSXFLASH, VDSMEDIA and VDSSURFX, and because of the hacker. It was changed in the latest version. Code was also changed to support VDS 5.

Arcray if its one of my DLLs the problem let me know please.

email me at:
with your serials and we will certainly work something out.

I don't come often anymore to VDSWORLD, but I certainly support my VDS DLLs thru email.

Thanks and let me know.
