I use an on-line database to store user registration details, for Link Spider.
They enter the details into the program, (no Credit Card Details etc), only Name and email, The program then sends this information to a web site page, the user has to then confirm the order, once confirmed they receive an email containing a link to a secure site for entering their credit card details.
Once they have entered their credit card details, they are automatically added to the On-Line Database, and they only need to restart the Link Spider program and they can run the full registered version.
If there credit card was rejected or payment did not go through, i simply disable their account in the database, until payment is recevied.
Also they can not use the program on another machine. It is locked to the computer via the OS. (Not any hardware).

*. This system works great for me, and my customers have reported how easy it is to register, not having to enter any codes, or place files in a directory.
ps. The Database is a password proected SQL database.
And since Link Spider is designed for Internet Use, (eg must have a connection to the internet) its great for my registration system.
I use, Paypal & Regnet, I was thinking of looking at Worldpay but there setup, annually fees can be a bit expensive. |

Howdy,
Sounds like a good plan. As mentioned earlier, even if the method I outlined previously is somewhat insecure, implementing a system in which the software checks a number via an online database would allow for termination of the user's account (if, for example, their payment information is not legit, etc.) However, all scenarios (even the most secure) are hackable, eh? At least this method would allow for instant registrations (i.e. instant gratification) while allowing the author to lock the registration in the near future-if need be).
FYI: I have used a method very similar to what you outlined. (Because it is an Internet app., I can lock a user out of the program remotely--if necessary.)

An extremely effective way is to do an online check, checking to see if
the registration details are valid against a database, and if the details
are valid but not in the database (illegal details), or the details are banned, you can
lock the user out of the program.
Something kind of like what rubes_sw talked about. _________________ FreezingFire

| Yeppers. That's similar to what I do with one of my apps. |
