I don't know -- the only info I know is in the registered user's area, but
it hasn't changed for awhile. I wish I had some news to get excited about. Crying or Very sad

Since we haven't heard from Jules for some time I think that things are really busy to make a speedy appearance of VDS6.

At least I hope that's what it means Confused

JRoza,

I was thinking the same thing. I was just hoping Jules or Commercial Research would drop another little taste.

I have been awaiting the release of VDS6 since early 2005. The last estimate I received was from Jules who anticipated mid-2005 or a little later... admittedly a guess as it's up to CR, but no doubt a more educated guess than anyone else could make.

Since then the news has basically dried up. Sad

I am more and more convinced as time marches on that VDS6 will never see the light of day. It is not a large language in terms of its user base and I can only wonder whether the expected sales and upgrades could hope to recoup the development costs if that is what is holding it up.

I'm not wishing to be a prophet of doom... I'd love to see the release of VDS6 and sincerely hope I shall be proved wrong... but I'm not holding my breath.

Regards.

hi john,

i too have noticed the drying up of info on vds 6 which i thought was strange given that jules was keeping us well informed of its development

like you, i would love to know what is happening with it now ... any news jules (if you are allowed to say anything)?

if cr is no longer interested in developing vds (version 6 and beyond), then there are alternatives that cr could do eg. there have been a number of folks who have been interested in buying the rights and code to vds from cr with a view to developing it themselves, if cr is no longer interested in vds, perhaps they could sell it ... this way we all win as cr gets $$$ and we get vds 6+

I have also been wondering if there is any development still going on. I really like VDS and have come to depend on it in my business. As far as putting together quick programs to do this or that, it is one of the best tools I have found. Many times I can literally go from the starting point of a brand new idea to having a working prototype for a program in less than 30 minutes.

I'm sure that sale of the code is an option, if the current owner (CR) doesn't feel it is financially viable. I will support VDS however I can.

If the language's rights are not ridiculously priced I'd be interested in purchasing them. We've had success in the past outsourcing portions of client projects to off-shore developers in India. VDS would be an excellent candidate to split up for team development thus reducing development time and cost. It would also be a good opportunity to look at doing away with the one-size-fits-all runtime for a more ground up approach. I often wondered why VDS uses a single library when multiple libraries could offer a more efficiently compiled executable.

At any rate it's only talk unless I hear back from C.R., I just sent a message asking if they would like to discuss a sale.

After speaking with the ceo of CR several years ago and offering $ for VDS (a little over $100k) they were unwilling to sell. It's unlikely they would be willing to sell unless they really needed the money or the offer was right.

While the language is good; a couple hundred k would take several years of very good sales to get that investment back.

I fear you are right... however, as time marches on I would think any sell price for VDS would shrink as it becomes more and more dated.

Thanks PG for the information. My partner and I have been discussing the return on investment issue, he too is somewhat doubtful that product could provide a speedy return considering its current market share. He feels that designing a competitive product from the ground up would be a more prudent use of capitol. It's a real dilemma; an updated VDS version would obviously have name recognition and syntax familiarity within a small portion of the community; whereas a new product would have no following nor preconceived notions of the current limitations including poor support. It’s really hard to determine fair market value without detailed past sales knowledge.

My interest is solely in seeing Julian’s original concept updated, pushed forward and expanded upon. I truly hope CR either steps up to the plate and releases an update or steps aside.

BTW: I visited Julian’s site the other day and suspiciously absent was any mention of his involvement with VDS under past accomplishments which differs from his previous “About” page. (Probably of no significance but curious none the less)

Just following up:

It doesn't appear that the owner is motivated to sell, in fact he mentions in his message and I quote "if you love VDS, be sure that 6 will come alive and also a 7.xx etc...". It's certainly encouraging to hear that there are plans for continued development.
