Exactly. Which brings us back to XP. And the fact that XP Home does not include WMI.
Many people have given up on Vista and gone back to XP. Windows 7 isn't here yet and even when it is publicly released many home users and businesses won't go near it until SP1 is released. _________________ cheers

Actually WMI is included with XP Home. You have to enable it just like Windows 9X. The only difference is that you have to acutally install it on Windows 9X while XP Home you do not. Also you don't get all the utilities with XP Home but WMI is there and once enabled works just fine. I did a lot of my GadgetX testing of the WMI demos included with it on XP Home and XP Pro. Either way I think there should be a simple way to test for the network with VDS native code without the need for an extension. It's just easier with an extension is all. _________________ Home of

True Dave.. You could download and install it, the WMI.. but I know.. NOT a good solution. So how do we resolve such a simple problem. At least it appers to be simple. LOL
you could do a netstat -t this should be availible in ME but not totally sure.
so do a netstat -t
this should give you a list like the below.
This is with my cable disconnected from my network.. IP address changed to protect the innocent.
Proto Local Address Foreign Address State Offload State
TCP 121.32.22.22:53312 152.58.220.232:epmap TIME_WAIT InHost
TCP 144.22.11.22:53315 156.43.33.430:epmap TIME_WAIT InHost
---many more entrys with TIME_WAIT.. Note TIME_WAIT is the only thing listed
This is with my cable just plug into the network trying to get a connection.
Proto Local Address Foreign Address State Offload S
tate
TCP 134.23.52.44:244 143.11.66.77:ldap SYN_SENT InHost
NOTE: only ONE (1) SYN_SENT entry.
This is with my cable connected and with connection.
Proto Local Address Foreign Address State Offload S
tate
TCP 231.11.11.11:221 rw-43-443:epmap TIME_WAIT InHost
TCP 641.33.33.33:545 tre-tr-02:1460 ESTABLISHED InHost
TCP 77.22.54.54:444 sd-dd-05:epmap TIME_WAIT InHost
---many more entrys with ESTABLISHED and TIME_WAIT.. not everything listed.
So what I get out of this is... if their is a SYN_SENT... This means that the network is trying to connect.
If there is a TIME_WAIT with NO ESTABLISHED listed then their is NOT a connection.
If there is a ESTABLISHED then your connected.
So I would just run the netstat -t pipe it to a varible and do a match for ESTABLISHED.
IF there is a ESTABLISHED then your golden.
Just an Idea. |

OK.. NIX THAT IDEA ABOVE.. Not consistant... BUT..
if you do a
nbtstat -a 127.0.0.1 with the cable disconnected you get.
Local Area Connection:
Node IpAddress: [0.0.0.0] Scope Id: []
and if you do
nbtstat -a 127.0.0.1 with the cable CONNECTED you get.
Node IpAddress: [132.22.22.2] Scope Id: []
So maybe that could be used to test for connection.
if 0.0.0.0 then no connection else connection?? |

Ok just so we don't keep this thread going forever Here is some VDS native code to detect if the network is enabled or not...
| Code: |
#--------------------------------------------------------------------------------#
# #
# Description: The IsConnected function determines if the PC it is running on #
# has a network connection. #
# #
# Author: Johnny Kinsey #
# Copyright © 2009 DragonSphere Software All Rights Reserved. #
# #
#--------------------------------------------------------------------------------#
#DEFINE FUNCTION,ISCONNECTED
# Simplly returns true if you have a connection or VDS false if you do not.
%A = @IsConnected()
If %A
Info How about that you are connected to the network.
Else
Warn Ummm you need to check your network connnection.
End
stop
:IsConnected
#
# This uses the wininect function InternetGetConnectedState()
# so if you are on an IPX network sorry it will return false.
#
# Upon return of the function %T defined below can be 1 or more of the following values.
#
#%%INTERNET_CONNECTION_CONFIGURED = $40
# Local system has a valid connection to the Internet, but it might or might not be currently connected.
#
#%%INTERNET_CONNECTION_LAN = $02
# Local system uses a local area network to connect to the Internet.
#
#%%INTERNET_CONNECTION_MODEM = $01
# Local system uses a modem to connect to the Internet.
#
#%%INTERNET_CONNECTION_MODEM_BUSY = $08
# No longer used.
#
#%%INTERNET_CONNECTION_OFFLINE = $20
# Local system is in offline mode.
#
#%%INTERNET_CONNECTION_PROXY = $04
# Local system uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet.
#
LoadLib wininet.dll
%t = @BINARY(DWORD,0)
%R = @lib(wininet,InternetGetConnectedState,BOOL,INT:@Addr("%t"),INT:0)
FreeLib wininet.dll
Exit %R

LOL..
I knew I could get you to cough up the code with all my ramblings.
Thanks for putting that one to bed I was running out of command line stuff. |

Are you serious! People still use IPX?!?!? I haven't seen anyone use IPX since like the Windows 3.1 days. _________________ 'What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.' - Confucius (550 b.c. to 479 b.c.) |

Well I have used IPX for older games since their implementation of TCP/IP was not as sound as the IPX protocol. _________________ Home of

I have the original install disks for Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1 and I believe 3.11. I could probably make disk images of them and send them to you if you really want them.
I usually keep a 3.1 install on a Virtual Machine to tink with now and then. _________________ 'What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.' - Confucius (550 b.c. to 479 b.c.) |
