Although I'm not sure yet how that utility exactly works, I guess you could simply let
the utility do the work |

I think it may actually be so that the program copies its own program to the other computer
remotely (to the admin$ share, which seems to respresent the WINDOWS directory?), then
remotely installs itself as a service and launches the service. I'll see if I can replicate
something like this in a DLL. The problem will probably be compiling my own service
application... Maybe Johnny knows anything about compiling services in C++. |

The program I was looking at is located here:
http://www.matcode.com/remoteshutdown.htm
It is written in C...for C I use LCC-WIN32 for compiling (it's free), but I don't think source is included, but you might be able to ask for it...
Here is the e-mail I received from info@matcode.com:
| Quote: | You right, there is started a small service using RPC service interface.
this client working on the system account and not required additional
user's threads or user's rights to shutdown or restart.
But there is an another way to shutdown (without poweroff) computer
remotelly, and much easey. You can find this at my examples page.
Best regards,
Vitaly. |
Another program that might help is PowerOff 3.0. The source is included and is written in C/C++ (don't know yet). It does include the source code, which I think would be very helpful (it installs a service, but not a remote one). It can't power off remote computers from my experience. Only shuts them down. You can download that at http://users.pandora.be/jbosman/pwroff30.zip _________________ FreezingFire

BTW, I'm planning on selling/distributing the application which will be greatly modified, and I can't rightfully sell another person's program. However, if it were a DLL or program sold for making programs, I could use that. _________________ FreezingFire

Hi FreezingFire,
I just looked at the site and he does have some source code that uses the InitiateSystemShutdown function and he shows how to set the proper rights for the machine. I will re-write this to be used with Gadget as a single sub-routine for you and send you the new code. _________________ Home of

Remember that that function is just the InitiateSystemShutdown function I mentioned
which is not capable of powering off a computer. |

I received this reply about Poweroff, though I don't really understand everything about the ADMIN$ share...:
| The creator of Poweroff wrote: | If you are experienced with Win32 programming in C/C++ you should take a look at the SCM (Service Control Manager API) and play around with services, especially with accessing the SCM of a remote machine.
Basically, Poweroff works like this: It makes a network connection to the
target machine's ADMIN$ share, copies over a binary, registers it as a
demand-start service which is then started remotely. The service does
nothing else than starting another process which first stops the service
and removes it and after that does an ExitWindowsEx in order to shut down the machine. |
Thanks,

Do you think this would be more possible in VDS 5? I would like to
make a utility in VDS that powers off a remote machine like the program
Tommy mentioned:

Well I wanted to physically power off the remote computer, which is
entirely possible. I don't want to just shut it down. But I don't know
how to do this. _________________ FreezingFire
