There is a specific reason VDS isn't recompiled in Delphi 7. First because it's not as simple as taking your code and hitting the compile button. Many of the vcl's they use in VDS are 3rd party, some vcl's come with source code and some do not, then some of those vcl's simply are not compatible with Delphi 7 and would take an enourmous amount of time to rewrite them just so they are compatible with Delphi 7. Second the runtime size would increase a few hundred kb.
There really is no purpose to go to all that work to upgrade all the vcl's and VDS code just so it can compile in Delphi 7 when there is no obvious benefit. Rather, SADE can work on the code in Delphi 2, fix bugs that are encountered and add new functionality. Spending a year re-writing VDS with no new features/enhancements just so it's 'compatible' with Delphi 7 makes little logical sense. |

I never mentioned re-writing the program code. I had no idea
everything thru VDS4 was written with an ancient version of a
buggy compiler.
I assumed they had just received a patch that fixed the problem
when I posted about recompiling the other versions.
The point is - they knew about the bug for over 2 years and kept
turning out new versions with it. VDS 5 would prolly still have it if
we hadn't made so much noise.

I wouldn't say that Delphi 2 is that old. It's like three or four years
old, it's not like the ancient egyptians used it. _________________ FreezingFire

Mac, I think you are becoming cynical now... There seems no point arguing to that...

Delphi 2 isn't really buggy. There are bug's in all software and the list bug was just one of them. There are alot of bugs in Delphi 7 too. I don't think anyone can name one software product out there that doesn't have any bugs.
You're right it may have taken 2 years but it does take time to locate what is causing the problem. Also many Delphi vcl's that ship with Borland do not come with source code, so SADE 'may' have had to rewrite either all or portions of the listbox/list functionality to fix the problem. I can't say for sure because I don't work for SADE and didn't fix the bug, but with my experience with Delphi alot of fixes or rewrites take time to do. |

LOL, which part Tommy?
Them knowing about the bug for so long, or using a compiler 5
versions behind the current one? Apparently they don't upgrade
just to get bug fixes either.
I really didn't mean to sound so cynical, all I did was ask a serious
question - and I don't especially like gettin' ridiculed for doing so.
There's plenty other reasons ya can find to do that...

What I was talking about was mostly the "was written with an ancient version of a
buggy compiler." part of the message. If Prakash says that Delphi 2 contains a
bug, you make it "buggy". It isn't like Delphi 2 is full of bugs. Also the bug that you
mention seems pretty tiny to me. So in the way I feel it, you are just expanding
the problem after every comment someone adds.
Ancient I believe, it is not at all, as Prakash told as well. It isn't like Delphi 2 is from
the stoneage. I think the main reason for VDS being compiled in Delphi 2 is to reduce
the filesize which I think is very good. And as Prakash mentioned, Delphi 7 contained
bugs too. That according to you should make for Delphi 7 having a "buggy"
compiler just as well... |

The problem is, you're not asking serious questions, you're expecting
things that are not realistic. And I personally will ridicule you for such
unrealistic comments and expectations. You dogged VDS 4, and now
you're already making the coming release of VDS 5 a fiasco, and I will
do everything in my power to put you in your place for such ignorance
and unrealistic expectations.
At least most people here can see realistically. Maybe some of the
younger people don't see the reality of it all yet, but that's to be
expected of them.. But you, you've been around long enough to
know and understand how things work in the software industry, but
yet, you seem completely ignorant to the reality of this now. You
disappoint me greatly regarding this.

Well I'm done anyway. I finally got a decent answer to my
question (via Prakash), just had no idea it'd take so long.
I'm also beginnin' to wonder if everybody is readin' all the posts
before they answer - some of us seem to be in the twilight zone...

I applaud you for keeping personal BS out of that response Mac. I'm not quite that grown up. _________________ -Sheep

| We really don't need to flame each other here guys. We can all have different opinions about how software upgrades should be handled. I'm not saying one way is right or wrong, there are good points on both sides so really let's not make this into a personal attack on each other. |

OK Garrett, we posted together and I just read yours.
Tell ya what I'll do. I won't say anymore about VDS 5, and you
stop saying stuff like you just did about me since you're outta
my reach. I thought we were bein' humorous, but apparently you
aren't.
The sad thing is - I really like VDS. My goal was to see how much
stuff had been overlooked or ignored in the new release. Apparently
it's not been totally wasted, since they're fixin one longstanding bug
at least.

Your posts came across as demanding and unrealistic. Appologies if I
was harsh in return, I replied in the fashion that I felt was appropriate.
