| What type of code are you running to make it use up 12 mb in 5 seconds? If you loop through a list loading and saving the file that will happen but who programs like this? Not only is this a waste of resources but certainly is not optimized code. If you need to write a log file you can do so with BINFILE by appending to the file rather then loading the entire file and appending to it. |

It was 12Mb in 5 minutes, and it was with the script that someone came
up with for testing the memory leak, although who the author is eludes
me at the moment. _________________ Bill Weckel

If the only situation in which this will happen, is a testing script, do you really think
that this issue is any problem at all? |

If you are using VDS 3 and need to keep a log then this is a problem.
Of course there are workarounds, but you shouldn't really have to work around a known problem. _________________ -Sheep

My 2 cents worth !
I love VDS, I will upgrade because I love NEW features !
(I can't really afford upgrades either, but when needs must)
When XP came out, I upgraded 2 weeks after it came out because I wanted NEW features !
As for the memory leak thing, I can't wait because i will be able to release roughly 40 odd programs in New VDS5 code with loads of new features etc.
When i first used a trial version of VDS 2.5, i loved it and when 3.x came out i bought it because of the NEW features, when 4.x came out i loved it even more so i bought it !
I mean look at Windows ME, in my opinion its full of bugs, i find it very unstable but you don't see microsoft re-compiling it !, OK, they release the odd patch, but they will not spend the man hours and resources re-writng it, re-compiling.
My small company produce Interactive CD-ROMS for schools and businesses, we produced a CD-ROM for a client (10,000 copies where produced) It had a few bugs But we released a small patch that users could download. Just to claify we did not fix all the bugs, there were still a few bugs left. The client was still happy with his CD-ROM so we completed it. In the user aggreement the client signed, it said:
" 7.5 You acknowledge that:
a) the Software has not been produced to meet your individual specifications:
b) the Software cannot be tested advance in every possible operating combination and environment;
c) it is not possible to produce Software which is error free in all circumstances. "
On another subject, people who release serial numbers, create key generators are doing the software development damage, I mean i released PC Protector 2.1.1 It had over 11,000 downloads, I sold 120 copies, I found 5 sites with serial numbers on them for the Program. I lost potential revenue. So i have looked at ways to protect my programs, but i don't think there is any safe way, If a cracker wants to crack your software, he will !
This is just my opinion !
BTW: I have registered quite a few DLL's for VDS, (cause i can't write them), but i do feel the guys who write the DLL's are doing/have done a great job i will still support and continue to buy DLL's that I fell i can use.
Also I think most software has a default( for want of a better word) statement:
USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK ! - This Software has not been produced to meet your individual specifications. This Software cannot be tested advance in every possible operating combination and environment.
It is not possible to produce Software which is error free in all circumstances.

Well this is most interesting indeed!!
As a raw novice, I have only used VDS for a very few months and really am only a programmer wannabe. Sometimes, I don't even know what you guys are talking about! But I liked VDS from the start for its ease and "feel".
But it general, I believe it behooves the developer to address
customers concerns in an adequate fashion. Its just good for business!
Not doing so is costly in the long run.
Admittedly, I don't know all the history of this issue but I just get a sense from my reads that maybe this issue wasn't.
(I am ready to duck!)
There is an old saying in the restaurant business:
"Give them a lot, make it good, don't charge to much, and they WILL come back!"
I think it applies here too!

Please don't lock topics unless really necessary.
Okay SnarlingSheep I agree there are times to use a log file but why are you using a listbox to do this? You do realize loading a log file, appending ot it and then writing to the disc is a waste of resoruces as well as is not optimized right??
Using binfile or VDSINOUT you can cut down on the amount of resources, and the amount of time to write to a logfile simply because you just write to the file, you don't need to load the entire thing, edit it and then save it back to disk. Optimizing code like this will make programs run alottttt faster. |

If I remember correctly, this problem was noted as of VDS 3.x At what
point VDS 4 Development was at, I can't say, but it may be possible that
VDS 4 was already well into development by the time this issue was
brought up. I can't say though, as it's been a long time.
But at least the bug has finally been fixed, and that's great to hear. I'm
sorry to hear that many can't afford to upgrade to VDS 5, but there is
nothing I can do to help them on that matter.

I never said I was but I believe that's how the bug was found. Since vdsinout is free you could go that way, but that's still working around an issue in something you paid good money for.. _________________ -Sheep

| Having a debate is one thing but attacking one another isn't really necessary. Any threads with personal attacks will be promptly deleted. |

Yes indeed, turned a bit vitriolic. Unfortunately.
But there was lots to be learned within these recent threads.
I know I did. (learn)
And of course, still anxious to see VDS5

I must agree completely. I love to debate issues every now and then. I'll even take the side I don't personally believe in sometimes just to look at it from a different view (it actually helps sometimes) but we should not make personal attacks against one another.
Can't we all just get along
Regards,

Maybe we should just let this discussion die.
One clarification, though:
When I posted earlier in support of fixing the earlier versions' LISTFILE function, I viewed it as more of a patch. I thought that it was simply something that had finally been fixed in Delphi code that could be easily used to fix the bug in VDS with minimal time by SADE. I wasn't thinking there would be any reprogramming or re-engineering required. Evidently (from what I've read) I was mistaken.
My point is that if that had been the case, it would have been wise to issue a patch for earlier versions, if only to show commitment to the product. I would never expect them to invest any re-engineering in earlier versions. (For instance, the new IDE layout may be much more functional in VDS5. But I don't expect them to go back and incorporate this improvement in VDS4.)
Anyway, I'm still looking forward to upgrading to version 5 at the earliest opportunity. As a small business owner who by default has done a lot of the programming in my office, VDS has made my life much easier. I'm looking forward to seeing how far I can take it. It is certainly leaping beyond the image of a simple scripting tool. |
